KABILARMU BOOK COMPELET
"OUR TRIBE" Maman Abd Shakur
1 He and his friends were sitting in their smoking den, all of them engaged in getting high and eating snacks. He sat with one leg crossed over the other on the center table, leaning his head back against the couch with his eyes closed like someone trying to sleep. The door opened and two of their friends walked in dragging a young girl who was crying hysterically, trembling, and pleading, "Please have mercy on me, please pity my life, for God's sake don't do anything to me." She was sobbing, her entire body shaking. All the youths burst into laughter, except for the one whose eyes remained closed the whole time. One of the guys who brought her ripped off her hijab, threw it on the floor, and reached out to stroke her face, saying, "Who told you we know Allah? Muslims worship Allah, not us. And if you call His name again after we're done using you, I'll slit your throat." He widened his eyes threateningly as he spoke. She covered her mouth and continued crying heavily; she tried to muffle the sound, but the cries still escaped. The others burst into laughter, some even clapping. The man turned her around and reached to tear her shirt. The girl let out a piercing shriek, crying bitterly, and the man dealt her a resounding slap.
The one with his closed eyes slowly opened them and fixed his gaze on his friend. In a casual tone, he asked, "What do you think you are doing, Dave? Trying to rape this little girl or what?" Dave replied, "But Oliver, I'm in the mood. We need a woman, don't stop us please, Oliver." Raising his voice, Oliver said, "If you are in the mood, get an amateur for yourself. Let this girl leave right this minute; she's filling my ear with crying for God's sake." He glared at Dave and added, "I mean it, Dave, let her go, right this minute." Dave released the girl, stepped back, dragged a chair over, and sat down huffing. The others also put on sour faces, clearly displeased that he had stopped them from having fun. He glanced sideways at the girl; seeing how hard she was crying and how her entire body was trembling bothered him, so he quickly looked away because he hated seeing women cry—it always disrupted his peace of mind. Leaning back against the couch again, he closed his eyes and said, "You can go." The girl quickly grabbed her hijab and bolted out of the room.
He stood up, collected his phones and car keys, and started walking. When he reached the doorway, he turned back and said, "Disgusting. I don't know what the heck you guys saw on her body. What would you do with a little girl? What does she even have? What will she give you? A bunch of fools." He hissed, flicked his car keys, opened the door, and walked out.
"Eraj, hurry up and finish washing those dishes before Malam beats us today. You know we have Nahawu [Arabic Grammar]," a fair woman under forty stepped out of a room and said. Eraj pushed out her lower lip and whined, "I swear I don't like Nahawu at all, it's so difficult..." Another girl entered, greeting, "Amma, good afternoon." "Good afternoon, Eraj," Amma replied. Rahma quickly said, "Amma, good afternoon." Amma smiled and asked, "How is your mother, Rahma?" Rahma replied, "She's fine, Amma, she sends her greetings." Amma looked at Eraj and said, "Look, Eraj is going to be late again." Rahma quickly said, "Amma, I wanted to help her, but she refused, saying she had to soak her clothes first." Amma told Eraj, "Leave the washing to me, get up and go." Eraj quickly pulled her hands out of the water, stood up, stepped into Amma's room, and lay down while reading a book of supplications. Eraj walked up and stood in front of her, saying, "Amma, please zip me up from the back." Amma sighed, "When will you ever grow up, Eraj? I always have to zip up your clothes." Eraj stomped her foot on the floor playfully, whining, "Uhm uhm, I won't grow up, I don't want to grow up." Amma tapped her head gently, "Just turn around, joor! Look at her mouth." Eraj laughed and turned around. Amma zipped up her dress, and Eraj took off her long gown in front of Amma. "I, Maman Abd Shakur, who brings you this report, was actually feeling embarrassed for her," the author notes. Eraj put on her school uniform, grabbed her bag, and said quickly, "Amma, I'm leaving." Amma replied, "Go back safely." She watched her daughter go; by now, she was used to it—Eraj would casually strip and change clothes right in front of her without wrapping herself up or anything. Amma smiled, lay back down, and continued reading. Eraj met Rahma in the courtyard, grabbed her hand urgently, and said, "Let's go before they start locking the gate for lateness."

By 6:00 PM, they closed from school, walking along and chatting casually. Eraj suddenly widened her eyes in panic and said, "Oh no!" Rahma quickly asked, "What happened?" Eraj said, "I swear I forgot to do my Biology assignment, and the teacher is so wicked!" Rahma asked, "So what will you do?" Eraj's eyes filled with tears, and she said, "I don't know. She said we should draw a diagram of a flame cell complete with labels, but I don't have a textbook. Amma said she would buy me one, but she hasn't managed to get the money yet." Rahma smiled and said, "Guess what?" Eraj snapped, "This is not the time to crack jokes, Rahma. I swear I'm going to get beaten tomorrow." Rahma replied, "Relax, I have a biology textbook right now; my dad bought it for me yesterday." Eraj quickly wiped away her tiny tear, hugged Rahma tightly, and exclaimed, "You are the best friend ever!" Rahma pulled back, saying, "Eraj, we are right on the street, people are watching us!" Eraj quickly let go and said, "Let's go to your house so I can borrow it and do the work." She went to Rahma's house, picked up the textbook, and when she finally reached home, the Maghrib prayer had already been concluded.
She performed her ablution, prayed, changed her clothes, and brought out her school bag. "Amma, Rahma lent me her textbook so I could do the assignment given at school." Amma stroked Eraj's long hair, which reached the middle of her back, and said, "Eraj, don't worry. As soon as I get money, I will buy you all your textbooks, my baby." Eraj rested her head on Amma's shoulder and replied, "Amma, it's fine, I understand." Amma lifted her head up, saying, "Oya, hurry up and finish the assignment so you can return the textbook early tomorrow morning."
The next morning at dawn, Amma woke her up to pray and read the Qur'an. After they finished, Eraj tidied the room, swept the courtyard, while Amma prepared hot koko (porridge). Eraj took a bath, put on her long-sleeve yellow uniform shirt, paired it with a royal blue skirt following their school's strict dress code, wore her white hijab that reached her shoulders, slipped on her white socks and cover shoes, and strapped her school bag to her back. As she ran out into the courtyard, Amma, who was standing by the stove, turned around and called out, "Come here, Eraj." Slowly, Eraj walked up and stopped. "Yes, Amma?" Amma frowned and said, "Didn't I tell you not to run? By the way, did you even drink the porridge I made for you?" Eraj pushed out her lip and shook her head without saying anything. Amma scolded, "Why don't you like eating? Go back inside and drink it right now before I discipline you!" Eraj turned back with her eyes welling up with tears, went inside, and forced herself to drink the porridge because she didn't want to come back out and face scolding. She ran out saying, "Amma, I'm done drinking!" Amma smiled, "Good girl. Oya off you go, pray God grants you success in your studies, and mind your business with the boys in your class, you hear, my baby?" Eraj laughed and said, "Bye-bye, Amma!" She rushed out just as their school bus arrived, boarded it, and left.
After she left, Amma let out a soft sigh, turned off the stove, went back into the room, grabbed her hijab, stepped outside, and locked their front door. A short walk brought her to Rahma's house. She knocked and entered with greetings just as Rahma's mother was in the kitchen. "Welcome, welcome! Amman Eraj, you are visiting us today? Come in, come in!" Amma smiled, followed her inside, and sat down. Rahma's mom offered her breakfast, but Amma declined, saying she was already full.
Rahma's mother sat closer to her and asked, "Amman Eraj, is something wrong? I noticed you look a bit disturbed. What's bothering you?" Amma let out a sigh and said, "Maman Rahma, I came to ask for a favor—a loan of five thousand naira. I want to take Eraj to the hospital." Maman Rahma exclaimed, "Subhanallah! Is Eraj sick? I saw her yesterday evening here with Rahma, did something happen to her?" Amma replied, "She isn't experiencing an illness per se, Maman Rahma, but I want to take her to the hospital to get her checked. I'm worried; she is sixteen years old now, but she hasn't started seeing her monthly period yet. All her peers have started. I want to take her to the hospital so that if there's any underlying issue, we can seek treatment early." Maman Rahma nodded, "Amma, you know there are some girls whose bodies naturally take time..." Amma said with deep concern, "I know, but even if it's normal, it's better I take her for medical advice. I lost my husband, and I don't want to lose my only daughter." Maman Rahma reassured her, "I am right behind you, my friend." She stood up, walked into her room, and came out with three crisp one-thousand naira notes, saying, "This is all I have right now, take it and go to the hospital. In sha Allah, Eraj has no major problem." Amma expressed her deep gratitude, "Thank you, Maman Rahma, may God preserve our bond." She collected the money, said her goodbyes, and went home.

Around 1:00 PM during the short break, Eraj felt a sharp, agonizing pain in her lower abdomen. She quickly squatted beside her desk. A classmate nearby asked, "Eraj Ibrahim, what's wrong? Are you sick?" In a faint voice, Eraj replied, "Mermu, I'm not feeling well." Mermu quickly crouched beside her with deep concern, asking, "Where does it hurt?" Eraj groaned, "Since morning during assembly my stomach has been hurting slightly, but now it's hurting really badly." She burst into tears, clutching her stomach. Mermu said, "The thing I love about you, Eraj, is your absolute love for crying! Come on, let's go to the school clinic so you can be checked." She grabbed Eraj's hand; Eraj struggled to stand up, but as they stood, they were shocked to see that the entire seat was stained with blood. Eraj widened her eyes in terror, "Mermu, what is this coming from my body? Oh, my life!" She gripped Mermu tightly. Mermu said, "Sit down, you can't go outside looking like this. Thank goodness there's nobody in the class right now. Let me run to the clinic and check if I can find a kind doctor to follow me back here to examine you." Eraj sat back down on the chair, burst into soft tears, rested her head on the table, and clutched her lower abdomen.
The school clinic was quite a distance away, built in a separate wing—a large facility staffed by senior doctors. Mermu headed straight to the office of Dr. Tara, who was in charge of female students' health issues. However, before she could enter, Dr. Tara's secretary stopped her, saying, "Dr. Tara has traveled, but if you need anything, go to office number 4." Mermu said thank you and walked over to office number 4. Looking at the door, she saw the plaque reading "Dr. Oliver." She thought to herself, Who on earth is Dr. Oliver? He must be a new doctor because I have never seen him or even heard his name. She let out a sigh, Oh, I hope he's a good and kind doctor.
Slowly, she raised her hand and knocked about three times before a voice called out, "Come on in." She opened the door, stepped inside, and stood trembling due to the overwhelming aura he commanded, even though he hadn't yet lifted his face from his laptop. After he finished typing away, he finally raised his head and said, "Yes." Mermu, fidgeting with her fingers, lifted her head to look at him. Could this possibly be the most handsome man she had ever laid eyes on? He was young, bulky, fair-skinned, with a broad chest, large eyes, a sharp long nose, and long sideburns, though completely devoid of a beard. His lips were naturally pink like a foreigner's. He wore a black trouser, a royal blue long-sleeve shirt, and a crisp white lab coat draped over it. A massive cross necklace hung around his neck, resting against his chest, clearly crafted from pure gold, while one of his ears sported a tiny gold stud earring. Seeing that she was staring without speaking, he went back to typing. Mermu quickly stammered, "Sorry, sir..." He raised his head a second time and demanded, "What do you want?" "Um, sir, a student is sick and she needs medical attention..." He replied, "So?" She gave a nervous little cough and explained, "She's in the classroom..." He interrupted, "Go and get her." She lowered her gaze and whispered, "She soiled her uniform, that's why she couldn't come." He gave her a sharp, irritated look. "So you want me to leave my office and go check her in the classroom?" Mermu quickly said, "No, sir!" He pointed to the door and ordered, "Get out of my office." Mermu hurriedly turned toward the door, but right before opening it, she turned back with a pleading face. "Sir, please, she is undergoing a lot of pain, she is crying, she needs medical attention, please, please, please!"
It took a while before he stood up and finally declared, "Let's go." As they walked, with Mermu leading and him walking with an air of swagger, students whispered and stared. What kind of doctor is this?
Upon entering the classroom, Mermu led him to Eraj, who had her head resting on the desk while crying softly. They stopped in front of her. Mermu crouched down and said, "Eraj, the doctor is here, get up and explain how you're feeling." Other students crowded the classroom, some peering through the windows just to catch a glimpse of why this handsome doctor had come to their class. Eraj slowly raised her head. Her eyes were red and puffy, the baby hairs on her forehead stuck flat against her skin with sweat. She looked at Mermu, sniffling, wiping her tears with the back of her hand while pouting her lips. Dr. Oliver kept his hands inside his trouser pockets as he stared down at her in complete silence, momentarily lost for words. Mermu prompted, "Aren't you going to speak, Eraj? You're just sitting there crying." Eraj raised her head, tears streaming from her right eye, and locked her gaze onto Dr. Oliver. She whispered, "Good morning... si... si... sir."

Her voice trembled because of the way he was staring right into her eyes. She burst into fresh tears and clutched her abdomen. Slowly, he squatted down in front of her, stared into her face, and whispered, "Shiii..." He placed a finger over his lips while watching her. She quickly swallowed her cry, blinking rapidly. He asked, "Tell me, how does it hurt?" She made a tearful face, opened her mouth to say, "It's my stomach, and um um..." and broke down into another heavy bout of crying, unable to finish. He bowed his head and let out a heavy breath. If only she knew how a woman's crying triggered his anxiety—especially hers, which he felt deep in his soul. Frowning, he commanded, "If you want me to give you medicine, just keep quiet and stop crying. Kindly stand up and let's go to the clinic so I can give you medication." She swallowed her cries and tried to stand up, but quickly sat back down when she remembered how the seat was stained. She opened her mouth to start crying again, but he glared at her, making her swallow her tears. He stood up, unbuttoned his lab coat, and took it off. Using both hands, he pulled her up quickly. She raised her bloodshot eyes to look at him, and he stared right back into her pupils. She quickly cast her gaze down. He draped the lab coat over her shoulders, saying, "Put this on, cover your skirt." He turned to Mermu and instructed, "Clean up this mess." Then he told Eraj, "Let's go," and walked ahead. Eraj quickly adjusted the lab coat so that it covered her entirely from back to knee. She walked slowly out of the classroom as everyone stared. Walking behind him, she struggled to lift her feet due to the intense pain.
He led the way to his office, opened the door, and they went inside. Without telling her to sit down, he picked up his phone and began tapping on it. Seeing she was about to collapse, Eraj squatted down slowly, burying her head between her thighs, and cried quietly. What kind of arrogant doctor is this? He sees I'm in pain and completely ignores me! Where is Dr. Tara anyway?
Suddenly she heard the office door open, and then it sounded like it was locked. She didn't care and continued crying. Strong hands gripped her shoulders and lifted her up. She scrambled backward in panic, looking up to see it was him. He handed her something wrapped in a nylon bag, pointed toward the office bathroom, and said, "Go and change." Moving slowly, she walked up to him and tentatively extended her hand. He smiled slightly, placed the items in her hand, and she quickly turned and rushed into the bathroom. Inside the bag were a brand-new school skirt, a sanitary pad, and clean underwear. She quickly changed, placed her old stained skirt inside the nylon, and then realized she felt too shy to walk out. She squatted behind the door, groaning in agony, whispering softly, "Oh my Amma, my stomach, I'm going to die, please come."
Sensing she had been quiet for too long, he stood up from his chair. Without thinking twice, he opened the bathroom door and walked inside. Frowning, he demanded, "What are you doing in the bathroom?" Her eyes widened in terror, her voice shaking as she stammered, "I... I was just about to come out!" He turned and walked out. She followed behind him, and he pointed to a chair, saying, "Sit down." She sat down slowly, biting her lower lip. He stared at her intently, thinking to herself, So pretty, everything fits her. He pulled out a syringe from the medical drawer. The moment Eraj saw the needle, she jumped to her feet and bolted toward the door in panic. He froze, watching her. In her utter confusion, she couldn't even figure out how to open the door, so she burst into loud tears, stamping her feet and crying, "No, please, please, please don't give me an injection! Uhm uhm!" she cried, shaking her head frantically.
[2/1, 9:38 PM] Aishat Muhd: 🌺🌸🌺OUR TRIBE🌺🌸🌺 5
Pity overwhelmed him. He laid the syringe down on the table, walked up to her, took her hand, and asked, "You don't like injections?" She shook her head vigorously while wiping her tears. He asked, "Does your back hurt?" She shook her head again. He prompted, "So why don't you want me to give you the shot so the pain can stop?" She pouted and stayed silent. He gently pulled her hand, and she walked limply with him to the table. He picked up a pill and a bottle of Eva water, saying, "Drink." She took it, washed down the tablet, and swallowed it with a face that looked like she was about to vomit. He picked up the syringe. As she turned to run, he yanked her by one hand. She fell right against his chest and let out a shriek, "Oh my Amma, he's going to give me an injection!" He held her tightly against his body and administered the injection into her back. She burst into tears, weeping against his chest. He gently patted her back, and before even two minutes passed, she drifted off fast asleep. The injection was for severe menstrual cramps, but it also induced sleep.
He lifted her up and laid her gently on the sick bay bed inside his office. Pulling a chair close, he sat down by the bedside and watched her. The soft hair on her forehead rested flat, her nose was long and sharp, her face was round, and her mouth was so small you'd think a spoon couldn't even fit inside. He leaned his head close to her face and whispered, "You're a damn pretty girl, you're an angel created for me." He leaned forward and gently kissed her forehead, then placed his hand over hers, squeezed it tightly, and closed his eyes.
The ringing of his phone made him open his eyes. He looked at Eraj sleeping peacefully, smiled, removed his hand from hers, stood up, and walked back to his desk. He answered the call: "Hello, Mother. Don't tell me you've already started missing me, I just got here yesterday." He paused and smiled, "The area is cool, Mum, no need to worry. They posted me to a private school clinic." He paused again before saying, "Okay, Mother. Bye, take care."
Until 3:00 PM, Eraj did not wake up—long after school closed for the day—while Dr. Oliver sat beside her the entire time, watching her. Around 4:00 PM, she slowly fluttered her eyes open. She looked around to find the office empty, though she heard movements in the bathroom. She checked the clock, saw it was 4:00 PM, and widened her eyes in horror. "Oh no, Amma is going to scold me today!" She scrambled down from the bed, slipped on her shoes, and headed for the door. Just as she reached the door, she spotted his massive golden cross necklace lying on the table. She twisted her face in disgust and muttered, "Big-time pagan! Let me see what you'll wear now that I'm taking this cross necklace. Why does he wear a cross anyway, acting like we're Christians?" She scoffed, picked up the necklace, and shoved it into the front pocket of her school uniform. Then she bolted out of the office, grabbed her bag from the classroom, and hurried home.
When Oliver came out and found her gone, he wasn't happy; he had wanted to continue gazing at her pretty face. After finishing his work and preparing to leave for home, he began searching for his necklace, but it was nowhere to be found. No one else came to mind except Eraj. He folded his arms across his chest with a smile and muttered, "You'll have to bring my things back tomorrow, or else..." He grabbed his car keys and drove off to their smoking den.
[2/2, 12:50 PM] Aishat Muhd: 🌺🌸🌺OUR TRIBE🌺🌸🌺 6
She reached home around 5:00 PM because their house was quite far from the school, and the school bus had already left without her. She entered with greetings, but Amma wore a stern face. "Where are you coming from? I've been waiting for you since forever to take you to the hospital." Eraj rushed into Amma's arms and burst into tears. Amma panicked, checking her body and asking, "What happened to you? What did they do to you at school?" Between sobs, Eraj explained, "My stomach was hurting, so they gave me medicine and an injection that put me to sleep, and I only just woke up..." and went on to narrate the whole ordeal.
Amma smiled, stroked her head, and said, "Stop crying then. It's not a disease; it's a natural gift. From now on, you must take good care of yourself. Even though I know you don't mess around with boys, never let any man touch your hand. Also, whenever you see this happen, make sure you take a purifying bath, you understand? Didn't they teach you that at Islamiyya?" She nodded. "Good. Now, go take a bath, change your clothes, and come eat." Eraj stood up, changed out of her uniform, tied a wrapper around her waist, and headed to their outdoor bathroom to bathe.
She and Amma went to bed peacefully around 9:00 PM. Around 2:00 AM, her stomach rebelled violently against sleep, twisting sharply. She jolted awake, sitting up on the bed as excruciating pain ripped through her abdomen. She started calling out in tears, "Amma... Amma... Amman!" Amma slowly opened her eyes, groped for their small torchlight, switched it on, and shone it on Eraj's face. She saw tears streaming down, mixed with mucus, and asked in a panic, "Eraj, what is it?" With great difficulty, swallowing her cries, Eraj gasped, "Amma, my stomach... I'm going to die, it hurts so much, Amma!" She climbed onto Amma's body, crying uncontrollably, while Amma rocked her back and forth, reciting prayers and blowing over her.
At that exact moment, Dr. Oliver woke up from his sleep. He placed a hand over his chest, trying to regulate his breathing. He turned his head to look at the commercial sex worker lying beside him, hissed in annoyance, got up, walked out to the sitting room, sat on the couch, and rested his feet on the table. Closing his eyes, he pressed his hand to his chest. I can feel it... she is in pain. Opening his eyes with deep concern, he murmured, "What's wrong with her? Is it stomach cramps?" Looking like he was about to cry, he whispered, "My pretty angel, I'm sorry. Tomorrow when you come to school, I'll give you drugs to take so it won't hurt you anymore."
Finding sleep impossible as the clock ticked to 3:30 AM, and feeling deeply in his bones that she was still awake and in pain, he stood up, brought out his Bible, knelt down, placed his hand on the book, and prayed for her.
Meanwhile, Amma was frantic with worry. Eraj writhed before her, crying and groaning, feeling as though she wanted to pull the pain right out of her. Amma kept rocking her and gently massaging her lower abdomen...
Summary
"Kabilan Mu" (Our Tribe) by Maman Abd Shakur introduces a gritty yet emotionally charged romance set against a school and neighborhood backdrop. The story alternates between Oliver (introduced as a cynical, smoking-den-dwelling young man who unexpectedly shows a soft spot for victims of abuse, and who later works as a school doctor) and Eraj, a sensitive, sheltered 16-year-old secondary school student raised by her widowed mother, Amma.
When Eraj experiences severe menstrual cramps at school, she is taken to the clinic where the mysterious, handsome Dr. Oliver is on duty. Despite his intimidating aura and initial coldness, Oliver is deeply captivated by Eraj, comforting her through her pain and administering an injection. Out of a mixture of youthful rebellion and mischief, Eraj steals his golden cross necklace upon waking. Meanwhile, the narrative highlights the deep bond between Eraj and her mother, who struggles financially to support her daughter's health and education.
Description
The novel blends contemporary romance, social drama, and cultural dynamics in Northern Nigeria. It highlights stark contrasts: the reckless, hedonistic lifestyle of Oliver's social circle versus the modest, pious, and struggling domestic life of Eraj and Amma. The emotional core of the story relies on raw vulnerability—Eraj's adolescent fears and physical changes, Amma's protective maternal instincts, and Oliver's unexpected emotional awakening upon meeting Eraj.
Analytics
- Character Contrast: Oliver embodies a complex archetype—a hardened, wealthy young man involved with a rough crowd, yet harboring a soft, protective instinct against sexual assault and an instant vulnerability toward Eraj. Eraj represents youthful innocence, emotional dependency on her mother, and stubborn teenage pride.
- Thematic Focus: Explores coming-of-age realities, maternal sacrifice, socioeconomic disparities, and the psychological impact of first attraction.
- Plot Device: The stolen necklace serves as a physical catalyst guaranteeing future interactions between Oliver and Eraj, while Eraj's health struggles drive the medical subplot.
- Pacing: Fast-paced transitions between dramatic urban scenes and intimate, realistic family moments in a modest household.
Comments
- The author does an exceptional job of making Eraj's adolescent vulnerability feel authentic, especially through her fear of medical procedures and her close, transparent relationship with her mother.
- Oliver's character is intriguing; his sudden shift from a harsh den environment to a deeply empathetic doctor tracking Eraj's pain telepathically adds a dramatic, almost supernatural layer to his infatuation.
- The portrayal of Amma captures the silent struggles of single mothers striving to provide dignity and care for their children despite limited means.
Conclusions
The opening chapters of "Kabilan Mu" effectively lay the groundwork for an engaging romance built on tension, contrasts, and fate. By binding Oliver and Eraj through a medical emergency and a petty theft (the necklace), the author establishes an inevitable collision course for the next phase of their relationship.
